Art and Culture
Castiglione di Sicilia is a medieval town perfectly preserved rich in monuments and architectonic works with a great value.
It has been founded by the Greeks in 403 B.C. and then it was dominated by the Romans, the Arabic , the Normans and the svaves.
With Imperator Federico II of Swabia it became a big regal town rich in monuments which bring us back to history and to the ancient culture.
The main monuments are:
The Church of SS. Pietro e Paolo built by the Normans in 1190. Famous for its Meridiana designed on the for created by Temistocle Zona in 1889.
The Church of S.Antonio, built in the 18° Century. It is characteristic of a Greek structure belonging to the cross and the altar is realised with polychrome marbles.
The Lauria Castle belonging to the 13° Century, built upon the cliff of ancient rock from which it’s possible to admire all the Alcantara Valley and Vulcan Etna.
Still, walking the historic centre its possible to admire many other churches of very historic and architectonical value and so many noble palaces of Baroque origin.
On the shore to the Alcantara river its possible to visit the S.Nicola Church, built by the Normans between the XII and the XIII century and also the “Cuba” an original example of a Byzantine Cupola construction, built between the VII and the IX century.
